Sciatica

Updated: Jun 11, 2022

Sciatica is a syndrome characterized by pain in the sciatic nerve pathway and distribution area.

The vast majority of cases of sciatica are followed by sciatic nerve compression and damage, known as secondary sciatica.

Pain is mainly limited to the sciatic nerve distribution area, the back of the thigh, calf and foot. The pain can be invoked by a unique posture: the waist is flexed, the knee is bent, and the toes are on the ground. If the lesion is located in the nerve root, the pain increases when the pressure in the spinal canal increases (coughing, exerting force).

Pain is one of the most prominent symptoms of sciatica. In the early stage of the disease, it usually begins with low back pain. The pain is dull or tingling. The disease has a intermittent period, but recurrent episodes can last for several weeks or even years. The pain get worse at night or when coughing, sneezing. If you are walking, you will be very painful when you turn left and right, or from lying to sitting or standing. There are obvious tender points along the sciatic nerve. When properly pressurized to the tender point, it not only causes immediate pain, but the pain can also be radiated down to the foot.

If the symptoms are not particularly severe, patients can try their own massage to ease. Use both hands to press the muscles on both sides of the spine and focus on the lumbosacral area to relieve muscle cramps. Use your thumb or other fingers to press the obvious tender point of the waist. The force is from light to heavy, so that the pain is radiated from the point where it is along the lower limb to the farthest pain point. After a few minutes of continuous pressure, slowly pull off and rest for a while. Then, apply pressure to the second point, each tender point has to be massaged for about 20 to 30 times and at least five minutes.

If you have a serious pain even after your massage, you have to turn to the help of a professional acupuncturist. Acupuncture can solve the clogging of the meridians well, so that the pain is relieved.
