After such a long pandemic, vaccines bring hope. Vaccines help people to avoid catching COVID, strengthen our immune system, and finally achieve an end to the epidemic.
But recently, our clinic has started to receive calls from people who have reactions after receiving the vaccine. Their symptoms include fever, chills, cough, chest tightness, headache, body aches, loss of taste, loss of smell, loss of voice, nausea, diarrhea, and sweating…….
Why do some people have no adverse reactions after being vaccinated, while others are experiencing some or all these symptoms, some of which are potentially life-threatening?
The reason for the different reactions after taking vaccine is similar as when we accidentally scratch the skin and three possible outcomes can result. The first outcome is the skin will heal itself without scar; the second outcome is the skin will eventually heal with a scar; and the third possible outcome is that the skin cannot heal by itself and ultimately becomes infected without proper treatment.
One of our patients received the COVID vaccine along with her daughter. Her daughter did not have any symptoms, but that night she had fever, cough, difficulty breathing deeply, diarrhea, body pain, and loss of taste and smell. She had read from the Los Angeles County COVID-19 vaccine FAQ page on March 15, 2021 which mentioned: "The vaccine is very effective, no vaccine is 100% effective, and it is possible to get COVID-19 after receiving the vaccine."She immediately contacted us, received timely treatment, and fully recovered very quickly.
It needs to be clear that there will be no immediate immunity after receiving the vaccine, as our immune system takes time to develop a proper response. Each person’s immune system is different, and the timing of the response to the vaccination can be different from person to person.
The following is our suggestion:
1. Selectedyour healthiest time to receive the vaccine.
2. People with allergies or basic diseases should be careful receiving the vaccine.
3. If there is a serious reaction after receiving the vaccine, seek medical treatment immediately to avoid any life-threatening situation.
